How to create effective Gantt charts in monday.com?

I'm managing a construction project with 50+ tasks and complex dependencies. I need Gantt charts with: • Task dependencies (FS, SS, FF relationships) • Critical path visualization • Resource allocation • Baseline vs actual comparison The monday.com Gantt view seems basic compared to MS Project. Am I missing features, or is this a limitation? Any tips for making Gantt charts work in monday.com? Should I be using the Timeline view instead? Or integrate with a dedicated tool?

Former MS Project user here. monday.com's Gantt is simpler, but here's how to make it work:

Setting up dependencies: 1. Add a 'Dependency' column 2. In Gantt view, drag the dependency lines between tasks 3. Use the automation: 'When this date changes, shift dependent dates'

Limitations you'll hit: • No true critical path calculation • No resource leveling • Limited baseline tracking (you can snapshot dates manually)

Workarounds: For critical path, use color coding. Set a status for 'Critical Path' items and filter by that color in Gantt view.

For resource allocation, add a 'Assigned To' column and use the Workload view (Pro plan). It shows who's overloaded across all projects.

My honest take: For construction with 50+ tasks and complex dependencies, monday.com Gantt will frustrate you. Consider: • Smartsheet (better Gantt, integrates with monday.com) • Keep high-level milestones in monday.com, detailed schedules in MS Project

monday.com excels at team collaboration, not complex project scheduling.

Don't overlook the Timeline view — it's often better than Gantt for most use cases.

Timeline view advantages: • Easier to read at a glance • Better for presenting to stakeholders • Swimlane view by person/team

Gantt view advantages: • Dependency lines are clearer • Better for complex project structures

Pro setup for dependencies: Use the 'Dependency' column type (not just connecting items). It enables: • Automatic date shifting when predecessors change • Lag time configuration (e.g., 'start 2 days after') • Dependency chain visualization

For resource management: The Workload view is game-changing. You can see capacity across all your projects and spot overallocation instantly.

If you absolutely need MS Project-level features, consider the Project.co integration. It syncs bidirectionally.
