Migrating from Basecamp to monday.com: Complete migration guide and tips
We're a 40-person company migrating from Basecamp to monday.com next month. We have 3 years of project data, files, and discussions. What's the best way to handle this migration while minimizing productivity loss?

We migrated 60+ projects from Basecamp last year. Here's what worked: 1) Export Basecamp data using their API or third-party tools like Treepl. 2) Map Basecamp 'Projects' to monday.com Boards, 'Todos' to Items, and 'Docs' to Item descriptions or integrated Google Docs. 3) Don't try to migrate everything - archive completed projects older than 18 months. 4) Run both systems in parallel for 2 weeks. 5) Use the Import feature in monday.com (Settings > Import) to bring in CSV data. The biggest challenge will be the mental shift for your team - Basecamp's 'Campfire' chat is different from monday.com's updates. Plan for training.
Key difference to prepare your team for: Basecamp organizes by project with to-dos inside, while monday.com uses boards with items. This means your folder structure will change. I'd recommend mapping each Basecamp project to a monday.com board, then using Groups within boards to organize by phase or category rather than creating separate boards.
Don't forget about integrations. Basecamp has native integrations that monday.com handles differently. For example, you'll need to set up Slack integration separately. Also, Basecamp's automatic check-in questions can be replicated using monday.com's Pulse/Updates feature with custom templates. Plan for 2-3 weeks of adjustment time.
